Meet SFU’s Beedie School of Business Recruitment and Admissions Team
By Niamh Ollerton
Updated UpdatedKristin Matheson, Manager of Recruitment and Admissions of Graduate Programs at SFU’s Beedie School of Business – situated in Vancouver, British Columbia – speaks with TopMBA.com about the candidates the admissions team is looking for.
Beedie offers a full-time MBA, Management of Technology MBA, and an EMBA. The business school also specializes in international business, innovation and entrepreneurship, sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
What characteristics do you think make a good applicant to graduate business programs?
An MBA is an immersive opportunity. We’re always keen to meet people who are interested in pushing themselves outside of their comfort zone. Our class sizes are small and highly diverse, therefore, it’s great to connect with individuals interested in learning from others and sharing their professional expertise with their potential future MBA cohort.
What is the one characteristic you believe makes candidates stand out in the admissions process?
We want to learn about you and your unique background. Remember, there’s no right answer to each question, it’s about sharing your experiences, and articulating your future goals in a clear and honest way. It’s important to make a link between your unique background and our university’s mission and values.
How do you run your admissions committee and decide who is admitted?
Each application is reviewed by the Admissions Committee at two stages, pre and post interview. The Committee consists of five-six individuals depending on the program consisting of people from the faculty, staff and career center. We take a holistic perspective when reviewing applications and look at all aspects of an individual’s background and experience.
How do you involve current students or alumni in the admissions process?
Our students and alumni are highly involved in the Beedie community. Current students often connect with individuals interested in the program both on and off campus. We also have student ambassadors who connect with incoming students, and also host prospective students for campus tours or class audits.
Where is your favorite place to travel to recruit business students?
Traveling is an amazing part of this role. Being able to connect with people around the world and immerse yourself in another culture is a great experience. I enjoy visiting my hometown of Montréal, as well as countries in Asia and Latin America. One highlight to date has been Peru where I was able to visit Machu Picchu.
What one thing do you love about your city or campus?
The Segal Graduate School at the Beedie School of Business is an urban campus which means we’re located in the heart of the city in downtown Vancouver, surrounded by mountains and beaches. That being said, one of my favorite things is the number of amazing (and affordable) sushi restaurants!
What is the one piece of insider advice you’d give applicants?
We’re excited to connect with individuals who are interested in learning more about our school and programs. Don’t hesitate to connect with us online or in-person. We’re always happy to assist people throughout the application process to ensure our program is the best fit for your short- and long-term goals.
What do you think is the biggest myth about applying to business school?
Applying to business school can be an intense process, don’t let this discourage you. There often isn’t a right answer, only your answer, which is the one we want to hear!
